When the cranks are not rotating, there is no communication from the right crank. When the Garmin initially finds the power meter it checks for the presence of the right crank and posts the right crank missing message. It seems to do this check only once, so, unfortunately, once the cranks start rotating, the message does not automatically clear.
You can test this yourself by rotating the cranks backwards by hand, turn the Garmin on, keep rotating the cranks until the Garmin finds the powermeter. The message should not appear.
You can safely ignore this message unless you suspect the batteries in the right crank are flat. In this case, you will not receive right torque effectiveness or right pedal smoothness and the balance will be either unavailable or a fixed value.
